The vaporetto ferries to the northern lagoon islands leave from Fondamenta Nuove area in Venice (Line LN - Lagoon North), towards the north side (top) of the Castello district (sestiere of Castello). You can easily walk from San Marco to Fontamente Nove or take the vaporetto lines 41/42 or 51/52. To go back to Venice, you can either take LN line via Lido to San Marco, or the same way back via Murano to Fondamenta Nuove.

The vaporetto stops first to Murano and continues to Burano. The trip takes less than one hour. Burano is a relatively small island of the venetian lagoon but the most picturesque and colorful of them all. You could easily spend 3-4 hours for an island tour.

In Burano you can visit the Museo del Merletto (the Lace museum), that you see women working with lace by hand. Also there are plenty of shops, if you want to buy some lace. But be careful since there are a lot of China made lace products of inferior quality at high prices.

The best attraction of Burano are the colorful small houses and canals, that you can easily explore on foot. Burano seems to be very authentic and different from Venice, despite the hordes of tourists coming every year. While everybody seems to visit Murano island, Burano is a true jewel in the Venetian lagoon.
