There are several islands in the Venetian lagoon, waiting for you to explore them. Just perfect for a daily trip from Venice. You can use the vaporetto ferries to reach them very easily.

For the northern lagoon Islands (Murano, Burano, Mazzorbo, Torcello) you can use line LN that departs from Fondamenta Nuove.

You can reach Lido, San Giorgio Maggiore and La Guidecca from San Marco or San Zaccaria vaporetti docks. Or you can visit Lido returning from Torcello or Burano.

On peak tourist periods in Venice, there are special Direct (express) vaporetto ferries to the islands and back, so check before you go (http://www.actv.it).

If you like, there are several travel agencies that specialize on guided Venetian islands tours (Murano, Burano, Torcello). Not needed in our opinion but you can find them near Piazetta San Marco and Riva degli Schiavoni.

You can find more information for each venetian island here:
